Vaccines help protect children from serious, preventable illnesses at every stage of growth. Staying on schedule, attending well visits, and reviewing immunization records with your pediatrician help keep your child healthy and protected.

As parents, we all want to give our children the healthiest possible start in life. One of the most effective ways to protect children from serious illnesses is by staying up to date with recommended vaccinations.

Vaccines help train the immune system to recognize and fight harmful diseases before they can cause serious complications. From the first days of life through the teenage years, each vaccine plays an important role in keeping your child healthy and protected.

Understanding when vaccines are recommended can help parents feel more confident about their child’s healthcare journey.

Newborn: The First Step

Your baby's healthcare journey begins shortly after birth.

During the newborn period, your pediatrician will perform a thorough checkup and review important newborn screening tests. These screenings help identify certain medical conditions early, often before symptoms appear, allowing treatment to begin as soon as possible if needed.

This stage also establishes a strong foundation for your child's future health and development.

2, 4, and 6 Months: Building Early Protection

The first year of life is a critical time for immune system development.

At the 2-, 4-, and 6-month well visits, babies receive several vaccines that help protect against serious illnesses such as:

  • Whooping cough (pertussis)
  • Polio
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Rotavirus
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
  • Hepatitis B

These vaccines provide early protection during a time when infants are particularly vulnerable to infections.

9 Months: Monitoring Growth and Development

Many parents are surprised to learn that there are typically no routine vaccines given at the 9-month visit unless a child is catching up on missed immunizations.

However, this remains an important well-child visit where your pediatrician monitors growth, development, nutrition, sleep habits, and overall health.

12–18 Months: Important Toddler Vaccines and Boosters

As children become more active and explore the world around them, continued protection is essential.

During this period, children may receive vaccines that protect against:

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)
  • Varicella (Chickenpox)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Additional booster doses as recommended

These vaccines help maintain immunity and protect children as they enter daycare, preschool, and other social environments.

4 Years: Preparing for School

Before starting kindergarten, children receive important booster vaccines that strengthen their immunity against diseases they were vaccinated against earlier in life.

This visit helps ensure your child is ready for school and protected while learning and interacting with classmates.

11–12 Years: Protecting Preteens

The preteen years bring new opportunities and new health considerations.

At this age, recommended vaccines often include:

  • Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis)
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • HPV vaccine

The HPV vaccine is especially important because it helps protect against several cancers later in life. Vaccination during the preteen years provides the strongest immune response and the best long-term protection.

17–18 Years: Preparing for Adulthood

As teenagers prepare for college, work, and independent living, additional booster vaccines may be recommended.

These visits provide an opportunity to review immunization records, discuss future health needs, and ensure protection continues into adulthood.

Why Staying on Schedule Matters

Following the recommended vaccine schedule ensures children receive protection when they need it most.

Delaying or missing vaccines can leave children vulnerable to preventable diseases. Fortunately, if your child falls behind, your pediatrician can help create a catch-up schedule to get them back on track.

Not Sure If Your Child Is Up to Date?

You're not alone. Many parents are unsure whether their child has received every recommended vaccine.
